Set up some goals, hence our program for January - “Sharing Resolutions”! Please be ready to share at least one with us at our meeting, January 14th! There will be prizes!! Of course, Show & Tell is always a plus, too! Bring ‘em, and inspire us!
NOTE: SEWING DAYS PRECEDE our meeting - January 10 & 11th! Come and work on your own projects, and enjoy the party atmosphere of quilters at work! Bring a lunch, or grab a bite from several eateries that Montpelier now offers! Hope to see you!

Glue Basting

Glue Basting in preparation for machine quilting

Copyright ©2019 By Peggy Ladner

Water soluble glue can be used to baste together a quilt top, batting and backing in preparation for machine quilting.  Advantages to this method are:

No hand basting.

No need to pin and unpin sections as you quilt.

Quilt stitching can be done in any direction – up, down, or diagonal.

No need to flip the quilt to avoid the needle causing the fabric to pull, if quilting lines are all in one direction.

Requirements:

The quilt top, batting and backing must be washable.

The glue should be washed out after the quilting is complete, as it may affect the fabric if it is left in.  It’s unknown what would happen if the glue is left in the quilt, but you don’t want to spend time and effort in making a quilt just to have it wrecked by glue that was not washed out.

Glue products that have been used for glue basting with success are:

Aleene’s No-Sew Fabric Glue (Temporary Fabric Adhesive)

Elmer’s Washable, No Run School Glue

Both of these are available in 4 oz bottles.  It takes 2 – 3 bottles to do a roughly 48” x 60” quilt.  I find this size bottle easy to manage.

Batting used with success:

Warm and Natural, by the Warm Company

Toasty Cotton, by Fairfield

Both of the above have the advantage of being able to be quilted widely.  Warm and Natural packaging indicates it can be quilted as far as 10” apart; Toasty Cotton indicates 8”.  Typically, I quilt no further than about 4” apart, but generally the block dictates the width.  That and how much time I have.  Less time = less quilting, although given a choice I prefer to do a lot of quilting.

Instructions:

1
Make the quilt top and back.  The backing should be about an inch larger than the top on all four sides.
Cut batting to the same size as the backing.

2
Line up and layer the top, batting and backing.  Center the width onto your work surface.  The quilt sandwich can be top side up or backing side up, whatever you prefer as both the top and the back will each be glue basted onto the batting in a separate step.  Smooth the layers flat, but don’t pull out of shape.

3
Glue baste in horizontal sections across the entire width.  I prefer starting in the middle of the quilt and work out to the top edge and bottom edge in turn, in sections about 12” to 18” across the entire width of the quilt.

4
To start, fold the fabric back to about the middle of the quilt, exposing the batting and 12” to 18” of the reverse of the top or backing fabric.

5
Using either a dotting or squiggle motion, place glue on the fabric no further than about an inch and a half apart, in all directions.

6
Cover from one side to the other of the work either in lines or by tracing the shapes of the blocks.  Try to maintain an even width of glued area in the section, as it makes it easier to fold back and work the next section if the edge of the glued section is relatively straight.

7
Once the fabric section has glue applied, pick it up and lay it on the batting.  Smooth the layers flat, but do not pull or stretch.  Pat over the glued section to make sure the glue has good contact.

8
When basting, the tip of the glue bottle will pick up fibers.  Use a scrap of fabric or damp rag to clean the tip periodically.

9
Glue baste in sections.  Typically, I allow a section to dry/set up before moving on to the next section.  Don’t hang a section that is not dry across the edge of the table or other work surface as it may cause distortion.  Dry sections can be hung over an edge.

10
Once the top is glue basted to the batting, turn the quilt over and glue baste the back using the same technique.

11
Quilt the quilt.  Even up the edges by cutting away the excess.  Apply the binding and label.

12
Wash the glue out of the quilt.  I use the Normal setting on my washer, which consists of a cold-water wash and rinse, with a high-speed spin.  Use laundry detergent as you would for a regular wash load.  I often add several pairs of jeans to the load as it helps balance the washer since a wet quilt can be really heavy.

13
If you want to hand wash glue out of the quilt be aware that it will take multiple changes of the water and a lot of hand agitation until the water is clear, indicating the glue is gone.   Hand washing can be very strenuous.

14
Machine dry on low heat.

Miscellaneous tips:

Aleene’s No-Sew Fabric Glue needs the tip to be cut open with a utility knife or scissors.  After opening a bottle, I replace the lid and keep the glue bottle positioned upside down in a box until I’m ready to baste.  When basting if the glue bottle has to be set down, I replace the lid and put the bottle back in the box upside down so the glue will flow as soon as I’m ready to proceed.

If you need to reposition a portion of the work after the glue has set up, gently pull apart the layers and re-glue it.

Q & A

Does the glue gum up the needle when machine quilting?

No, and you can’t really tell if you are stitching through glue.  Batting is somewhat bumpy anyway and it can be difficult to feel the glue through the top or back.

Does the glue dull the needle faster?

No, it does not.

Does glue basting affect stitch length?

It does not affect stitch length.

Machine Quilting notes:

If you haven’t machine quilted previously, you may want to make up a glue basted sample and try out different stitch lengths to see what you like.  Mark the sample with the length setting of each sample seam.

It can also be helpful to do a sample in order to determine if you need to adjust tension when machine quilting.

Using a seam guide can be very helpful to keep the stitched lines relatively straight when machine quilting.

Also, washing the glue out leaves the quilt with a crinkled texture which can disguise a multitude of sins, such as seams that are not straight, and changing stitch length part way through a project.

Let's talk veterans quilts!

After Betsy and Debbie told us about their inspiring visit to the VA Hospital and the department that distributes our quilts we are all motivated to make more! We were talking today at sewing and did a rough calculation and we think that we made as many as 75 in 2019. That's really cool!

I wanted to share a lot of information about our veterans quilt project so to keep this interesting I'll share some photos of quilts you have made over the past few years! Please keep reading.

It's been 3 years since I posted the rules for people who want their quilts quilted so here it is again.

The rules:

  • Quilt tops are 48 x 60 - We pre-cut the backing and batting so we can't customize backing for an odd sized quilt
  • NO FRAGRANCE - I am VERY allergic to fragrances so I can't work with fabrics that have been washed in fragrance detergent or have any fragranced product sprayed on them (like Best Press). Sometimes one of the other quilters can quilt fragranced quilt tops but it's up to you to note that the top has fragrance because I bring the tops home with me and store them in a closet. I have had to take a top and seal it in a plastic bag until I could return it to the owner.
  • Quilts must be pressed and ready for quilting. We do not do any prep work on quilt tops so that we have more time for quilting so it's important for the tops to be ready to load when we receive them. Just press them and fold them neatly and bring them to me at the meeting. I hang them on hangers in a closet to keep them wrinkle free until they get quilted.
  • We quilt them when we can fit them in. You might get your top back next month or it might take 6 months. I match them up in pairs to backs so I might need to hold one to get another to match with it or we might simply not have time to quilt them.
  • We choose the thread color and quilting design. We can't coordinate specific requests for thread color and quilting design. Some of us quilt with computerized machines and some of us quilt free-motion. So far we haven't gotten any complaints!

Or quilt your own with your own rules!
Of course you can always quilt your own quilts! I will not be able to quilt ALL of the quilt tops that you make. I have some quilting help but 75 quilts is a LOT of quilts for us to do.

Fortunately, the program this month is about glue basting quilts so that they can be easily machine quilted. A veterans quilt is the perfect size to test this out. I can provide batting and/or backing to anyone who wants to quilt their own quilt. I'll have some batting at the meeting if you need some. (We are currently out of backing fabric as I'm awaiting a backorder wit no target delivery date.)

Quilts ready for quilting:
I announced at the last meeting that I would take quilts at the November meeting. It turns out that our fabric supplier is currently out of backing and I don't know when it will be here. They are waiting for it to come from overseas and said it could be a month or more. I have company coming in early December and staying for 2 months. I store the quilt tops in their closet! If you can hold your quilts until January I would appreciate it. I will not be quilting any veteran quilts until then. Whenever the fabric comes in I can spend December getting a stash of backing fabric ready.

For the longarmers:
We are so lucky to have several longarmers as part of our group and I really appreciate all of the help you have given me with these quilts. I encourage you to think about your commitment to this project for 2020 and let me know how many you would like to quilt. There are NO expectations! But if you can let me know how many you might want to quilt in 2020 I will know how many tops to accept and how much backing and batting to purchase. You quilt these quilts in your own time. There are no deadlines unless you set the deadlines for yourselves.

Thank you!
Vicki

November upcoming dates and events NOTE: sewing days PRECEDE our meeting

Wow, November is upon us....time flies when we are having fun (or not!)...

We do have lots of fun scheduled for ourselves:

Sewing days: November 8 & 9 -- Friday and Saturday -- come if you can and share the fun of sewing on our individual projects, while enjoying the company. Bring a lunch, or drive less than a mile to try some of our local fare! You can leave your machine and projects out if you come on Friday, and start right back in on Saturday!

Our Tuesday evening meeting will be on November 12th this month. Peggy L. and Becky B. teamed up to share with us "Glue basting" our quilts with Elmer's Glue! I can hardly wait myself to hear about this alternative!

Of course, show and tell is always welcome, so get prepared for inspiration just in time for the holiday season!

Hope you can join us....

quilt show & next events

The quilt show 2019 is complete! We took everything down today. Kathy M., I have your quilt, and will bring it on Tuesday! Will the person who picked up Christa's quilt please get in touch with her?

Thanks to everyone, including Diane's husband, and Vicki's for making the take down really easy! Betty, we owe a lot to your having your ladders available, THANKS! To everyone who submitted quilts, please know that the Center has pulled many of us aside to tell us how successful the show was, and how many "groups" from schools and elder centers made excursions in to the center to see the show! Our work was very much appreciated by the community! We're all looking forward to the next show, so stay busy, folks! See everyone Tuesday evening for our meeting and next weekend for sewing days.

Bring Trash to Treasures items Tuesday evening!

Upcoming Dates & Events -- October 4, 8, 11, & 12

Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful fall weather (my garden could really use some rain, tho, sigh), and making the most of lingering flowers, birds and bees! I've begun some Fall cleaning, too, and am coming up with lots of lovelies for our October Program - Trash To Treasurers! You still have a couple of weeks, so make some time, clean out a drawer or a closet, and guess what, you might just find the treasures to fill 'em up again, HA!

Reminders: October 4th, we take down our quilt show in Montpelier. I have heard from the director, that we have brought lots of foot traffic into the Art Center. If you haven't had occasion to bring your friends, schedule it soon. If you do have a quilt, please be sure to stop by Friday, October 4th between 9 & 10 a.m. or arrange for someone to pick up your quilt(s). Thanks, in advance, to our many volunteers to take the show down. (Especially, the husbands!!!)

October 8th Trash to Treasurers and Show and Tell are featured. Bring something you don't use any more and find something new to try out! Also, it's not just quilting fabrics, tools, patterns, books, magazines, some folks even have canned items from their gardens! Of course, bring your checkbooks so that you can put in your best bids on these items, and help our quilt club to continue to make our purchases of backing and batting for our Veterans Quilts.

October 11th & 12th are our Friday and Saturday sewing days. Come and sew; share what you are up to, and find out what projects everyone else is doing.

If you have completed the squares for our Crazy Quilt for WHEAT, please bring them to our meeting or to sewing days. Many folks have already brought their blocks in, and the quilt is shaping up to be quite a beauty! If you haven't yet started your blocks, or are struggling in any way, feel free to ask questions or turn them back in, no worries!! And, thanks to everyone who has completed theirs! They truly are gorgeous together!!

See everyone soon.....Marcy

Upcoming dates/events

IMPORTANT: For quilt show participants, please bring your quilts and your hanging rods (marked with your name) on this coming Friday, September 6th between 9 - 10 a.m.! If you can help to hang the show, please let Marcy George know at marcyg2009@gmail.com.

Our September meeting is on Tuesday, September, 10th, and our program will be two-fold:

Spend quality time touring our show which will be hung at the Montpelier Arts & Cultural Center (next door), and, if you need a refresher on foundation piecing, I will have some blocks to show you how it can be done -- and how easy it is to fix a "mistake"! Of course, we also want to see show & tell, so please bring your lovelies to share with us!

For those who might have completed blocks for our WHEAT batik crazy quilt effort, please bring them. I have handed out all blocks, but if you would like to participate, please let me know and I will bring more to hand out.

Our sewing days will be Friday & Saturday, September 13th & 14th. If we have many of the finished blocks for WHEAT, we can start playing with arrangements! And, of course, bring your own projects to work on, and plan to visit!

Happy September!

Thanks, and updates....

1. Thanks to Becky B. for such a wonderful trunk show. Hopefully, for those who couldn't attend last night's meeting, the pictures will be loaded to the Flikr site and you can get an inkling of her spectacular quilts!

2. Also, thanks to everyone who picked up multiple blocks to contribute to our WHEAT Crazy Quilt to be made with batiks! Never fear, there are more blocks, so let me know if you would like to make some.

W.H.E.A.T.  Crazy Quilt Rules – August, 2019
100 -- 8” finished blocks made with batiks
Leave ½” all around (9” unfinished block) – staystitch perimeter close to the edge to protect bias edges
If you want a review of the stitch and flip method, we can review at sewing days and in September.
Using provided foundations and fabric in slot #1, create as many blocks as you wish – the more, the better.
Provide the finished blocks to get more.

3. I forgot to announce that I had an email from someone who has a hand quilting frame that she would like to find a new home for. If you are interested, please email her directly. She says she's in Ashland.

Elizabeth Alley:  bettyalley@yahoo.com

4. Up and coming meeting topics:

September -- see our quilt show at the Montpelier Center, and discuss the "sew and flip" foundation method to make our crazy quilt foundation pieced blocks.

October -- Trash to Treasures

November -- Glue basting a quilt for machine quilting, by Peggy Ladner and Becky Brown.

December -- Holiday Potluck Fun

January -- Mary Mills will give us a "Checklist for Quilting" Checklist -- an organized way to ensure you get the most from your quilting experience.

Meal Train for Estelle

Estelle is home from the hospital! She has a long road of PT and OT ahead of her to get her mobility back but she home and feeling better. "Home" is actually the house where her mother lived in Ashland. It has a 1st floor master so she can get around easier.

Many of you didn't know that Tom had rotator cuff surgery an month or so ago and he's still in physical therapy too.

Neither of them can do any cooking at this time so I suggested that they set up a Meal Train in case some you great cooks would like to prepare dinner for them sometime.

The best thing for them is one-dish meals like soup, casseroles and pasta. The only foods that she really dislikes are Bleu cheese, tofu and cauliflower.

You can get the contact info and address on the Meal Train page and that's where you can sign up for a day to provide a meal. So far they've only scheduled through August and will see how mobile she is at the end of the month to see if they need help any longer.
You can still send cards or greetings to her address that's on the CSQ roster.

August Quilt Club dates: Sewing days precede meeting

Sewing Days for August are Friday, August 9th and Saturday, August 10th.
Reminder, we have taken on a project to remove badges from shirts, which will continue, in addition to our own sewing projects.

Our monthly meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13th. Lucky us, we will have a trunk show by our own Becky Brown. She says she has lots to share, and I am personally looking forward to the inspiration this show is likely to provide!

Just as a preview for the fall, in September, I hope we can "tour" our quilt show during our monthly meeting; in October, Trash to Treasures, and then, of course, November and December will have some holiday spirit and hopefully, lots of show & tell!

Looking forward to seeing everyone.....

Marcy

Veterans Quilts Update

Lots of quilting going on around here this month! This stack brings to total number of quilts that I've quilted this year to 38. I have at least 8 more here to be quilted. After today I will have completed 40 (plus 7 more that I made myself). 40 is my max commitment for a year.

Marcy and Denise are going to help me quilt a few of the ones that I have left.

For the next 2 months I have some projects of my own that I need to work on so I will not be taking any veteran quilt tops in August or September. If I get caught up I might start taking them again in October or November.

But I will be ordering more backing and we have batting so if you want to quilt your own quilts I'll be happy to bring batting and backing for you. Just give me a couple of week's notice before a meeting so I'll have time to dye a backing for you.

I'll let you know before the October meeting when I will be taking in more tops.

Estelle Porter news

Just wanted to let everyone know that Estelle had back surgery earlier today. They left for vacation but she was in so much pain that they had to come home. Tom says the surgery went well and she will likely need some time in rehab after a few days in the hospital. No visitors yet but you can send cards to her home address (check the membership list for that). Will post another update when we have one.

July Friday/Saturday Sewing

Friday and Saturday sewing days were well attended with lots to sew and say and show; guess we were making up for not getting together in June.

We have a new community service project: removing patches from Ashland Police Department uniform shirts. They are changing to a new color and all the sewn on badges have to be removed from their current shirts before they pass the old ones on and reuse the patches on their new uniforms. Yesterday we removed 4 patches from each of 28 previously own shirts - still in great condition because they are made of heavy polyester (yuck). Today we removed 2 sleeve patches from each of 50 new shirts, tags still on. We made fast work of it with 8 people today. Thank you to everyone who set aside their own sewing to help take off patches and to Peg for delivery and pick-up of the shirts. Here are just a few of the patches. There may be more at our August 9 & 10 sewing days.

NOW FOR SOME EXCITING NEWS:

We have been gifted 7 vintage quilt tops, and we all agreed they would be a fabulous addition to our September Silent Auction: Trash to Treasure. They were given to Christa B. by a friend of a friend, whose family did not want to keep them. So, if you've ever wanted to have a beautiful vintage quilt top to finish as you like, this is your chance without having to go from antique store to antique store in search of a lovely old top.

The money from these quilts will go towards funding our Veteran Quilt Project and we've made so many quilts this year it's time to buy backing fabric.

Take a look at these tops and maybe you'll want to bid on one (or more) at our September meeting. They are all bed size - some bigger than others, but nothing small.

Updated Quilt Show Entry Information

Have you selected your quilts for our show in September? If not, please do! We want everyone represented in the show. Our best shows are the ones with the most participation.

Entries are Due August 6 but, if you have them ready, please bring them to the July meeting. The earlier Estelle receives them the less stress the whole process it. Also it's very important that you include a color photo, she doesn't have the ability to print color photos.

You can download the entry from here.

PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE IN DATE:  THE DATE FOR DROPPING OFF YOUR QUILT/S HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM SUNDAY, SEPT. 9 TO FRIDAY, SEPT. 6, BETWEEN 9 AND 10 AM AT THE MONTPELIER CENTER.

A reminder for our fall exhibit.  We hope to include quilts that were created to fulfill our challenges from the past two years.  Just in case you've forgotten them they were:

1.  Create a pieced background; applique an object onto the background.

2.  Paint Chip Challenge -- pick a color from those supplied and create a piece with that focus.

3.  Using a randomly picked alphabet character, create a quilt to showcase that character.

4.  Create a quilt inspired by the word " idyll" or "ideal."

Note: we had two other challenges but they involved creating a postcard and we will not be using these.
