Another delivery of veterans quilts!

Usually I make the last delivery of quilts to our VA contact in December but I received a message yesterday that they are seeing a record number of patients and desperately needed more quilts.

After the meeting Tuesday, we had a stockpile of 25 quilts! I'm delivering these Thursday. That will bring our YTD total to 116.

Assuming this is our last delivery for 2023, this tops last year's total of 114. Since 2020 we have delivered a total of 437 quilts! That averages 109 a year. Any that we receive in December will be delivered next year unless I get a call for more quilts.

Well done ladies!

November Happenings

Here's your friendly reminder about our November meeting and meet-ups:

Sewing days are early this month due to scheduling changes at the County. Our sewing days are THIS weekend, Friday November 3 and Saturday, November 4th. Hanover County does want us to register and you can do that here. We are listed under Clubs and Social.

The next meeting of CSQ is Tuesday, November 14, at 7:00 pm. The program will be Fabric Snip and Rip. Please bring a 1 yard (minimum) piece of fabric suitable for a veteran quilt. We will use a game format to redistribute fabric pieces to everyone. Then use your fabrics to make 2 unfinished quilt blocks (12 1/2” x 12 1/2”) by January’s meeting. We will use these blocks to construct veteran’s quilts.

Quilting Friends will meet for lunch on Friday, November 17, at 1:00 at Kitchen 33. Please RSVP to Brenda by Wednesday, November 15, if you plan to attend so we can make a reservation. There will be no luncheon in December.

Need a photo to perk up this post? Here's the next WHEAT raffle quilt being quilted. Vicki will have it ready for binding by the November meeting.

Free quilting frame available

I was recently contacted by a woman from Louisa who has a full-size quilting frame, with extensions, that she wants to give away.  She thinks it is probably maple.  It sounds like it has never been used.  If you are interested in it, please contact me and I will give you her name and contact information.

Sadly, we have lost 2 members from Country School Quilters.

Linda M., a long time member of Country School Quilters, passed this morning, after a long illness. She will always be remembered with fondness for her kindness and the beautiful quilts she made.

Michal R. also a member of Country School Quilters passed on June 4. Please keep them and their families in our prayers.

More veterans quilts delivered!

Actually, this batch of quilts were picked up. Last night, we had the pleasure of hosting our liaison at the VA Hospital along with two of her coworkers.

John Scheid, Jennifer Farrell and Kathleen Bunch came to share with us how important and special our quilts are to their patients in the Interventional Radiology (IR) Department. we learned what they do in their department and how they identify the veterans that need our quilts the most. They truly care about the quilts and much as we do.

We had 37 quilts ready for them to take! That brings our 2023 total to 66. Great work everyone! I think we were all inspired to go home and start making more quilts for "our veterans".

Also, don't forget to send in your quilt exhibit entries by Friday. You can get the information here.

The July meeting will be our annual summer potluck and food drive for WHEAT. We'll post next month a list of things they need.

Getting Ready for the Quilt Exhibit!

We are very excited about our upcoming quilt exhibit at The Montpelier Center. We are fortunate to have a venue in our community where we can share our love for quilts and quilting. We have attracted many new members from previous shows along with a lot of appreciation from the community. The more members who participate the more diverse and interesting our exhibit will be. Our exhibit will be September 9 - October 9. Quilts will be hung September 8 and taken down October 10.

When we sent the original survey you offered between 31-45 quilts and several of you said you could contribute more if needed. Even if you didn't respond to the initial survey, we do want your quilts!  But now it's time to finally commit. Please enter any and all quits that you want. We may not be able to take every quilt but we would rather have too many than too few.

You may offer your quilt for sale. The Montpelier Center takes a 30% commission on for sale items, in the same way any other professional venue would.

Quilts are limited to 76" in length.

Please copy and paste the following "form" and fill it out for each quilt you are entering. Email the form answers, along with a photo of your quilt to karenannehayes52@gmail.com by June 15.

Quilt Name:

For Sale: NO / YES, what price _____ (30% goes to Montpelier Center)

May and June meeting information

Our May meeting is Tuesday, May 9 at 7:00 pm.

We are fortunate to have Meg Cahill from All Brands joining is to do a program on Needles, Threads and Basic Machine Maintenance.

Our June meeting will be a discussion with Jenn Farrell, our VA Hospital contact. If you have any completed veterans quilts please hold them until the June meeting. I think it would be nice to have all of the May and June veterans quilts in show and tell for Jenn. She will be taking all of the completed veterans quilts with her after the meeting.

One of our own

One of our newer members, Elizabeth Price (chocolate truffle maker extraordinaire), is having open heart surgery 4/28 for a bicuspid aortic valve birth defect she only found out about 14 months ago. She'll take 2 or 3 months to recover and she can't drive for 6-8 weeks. So it's likely we will not see her at sewing again until July or August.

She gave me permission to share the following support information. Her address is provided in case you want to send a card:

7028 Scotland Woods Rd
Hanover VA 23069

If anyone uses FB and is interested in following along, here is the link:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/954707362190891

Here is what I posted to friends/family for anyone interested in helping:
Miscellaneous things we could use help with in the next few months since I've had very little energy since February and of course will be in hospital and recovering for weeks/months:
1. Meals: (Meal Train) https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/o9900n
2. Driving: (Sign Up Genius) https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0a44acaa2ea3f49-drivers#/
3. Cleaning - general dusting, floors, dishes, kitchen, bathrooms (I'm so far behind because I tired so easily.) I'm considering hiring someone to come do a deep clean, just collecting info rn, but also running out of time. If anyone knows someone who is willing to come in every other week to help with whatever needs doing, that'd be awesome.
4. Mowing a field sometimes (this would give Andy a break as I had hoped to do this surgery in winter!)
5. Gardening - Y’all know how I love my garden.
A - Weeding: The weeds will take over the flower beds.
B - Veg garden: If anyone would like to use the unused section of my garden to grow their own vegetables, please let me know! We have a dirt road access to the back so you could come anytime and put the space to use. There is a sprinkler hose set up (between mows) and you can visit the ducks.
And if nothing gets done, we'll be ok. It's only a few months.

April Meeting - Clean and Cluter

Clean and Clutter is the program for this Tuesday, April 11 at 7:00 pm. Look around your sewing workspace and find those sewing notions and supplies that you know you will probably not use. We all have them—fabric, thread, pins, rulers, irons, stabilizer, patterns, etc.   Bring them to the meeting and let someone take a treasure home. Please limit yourself to a box size of about 12” x 12”.

This is not the same as our Trash and Treasure Program. This is a free swap limited to sewing items.
In addition to the program we will have our Show and Tell with a twist. If you have an organization idea that has helped you, please share it with us during Show and Tell.
Hope to see you Tuesday at 7pm!
