August Quilt Club dates: Sewing days precede meeting

Sewing Days for August are Friday, August 9th and Saturday, August 10th.
Reminder, we have taken on a project to remove badges from shirts, which will continue, in addition to our own sewing projects.

Our monthly meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13th. Lucky us, we will have a trunk show by our own Becky Brown. She says she has lots to share, and I am personally looking forward to the inspiration this show is likely to provide!

Just as a preview for the fall, in September, I hope we can "tour" our quilt show during our monthly meeting; in October, Trash to Treasures, and then, of course, November and December will have some holiday spirit and hopefully, lots of show & tell!

Looking forward to seeing everyone.....

Quilt Show Deadlines!

Our Quilt Show at the Montpelier Center - September 6 - October 4, 2019

Tuesday, August 6th is the deadline for all proposed entries into our quilt club show at the Montpelier Arts Center. Please remember to fill out a separate form for each quilt and print a color photo of the quilt to accompany the form. (Form is available on this site as well as the FB site!) ALSO: If you haven't yet mailed your entry to Estelle, you may mail your entry to Marcy George, see the membership list or email Marcy at marcyg2009@gmail.com for further details. While Estelle is recovering from her back surgery, a small team is assuming the organizational work effort, so please help us by adhering to these deadlines. Sorry, no extensions!

Friday, September 6th the show will be hung. This is a date change from what is on the entry form! All entries which are accepted into the show must be dropped off between 9 - 10 am at the Montpelier Center. If you have not yet volunteered to help hang the show, but have the time, please contact Marcy George.

Friday, October 4th we will take the show down. This is also a change from what is on the form, so please take note! Be prepared to pick up your quilt(s) on the take-down date.

Veterans Quilts Update

Lots of quilting going on around here this month! This stack brings to total number of quilts that I've quilted this year to 38. I have at least 8 more here to be quilted. After today I will have completed 40 (plus 7 more that I made myself). 40 is my max commitment for a year.

Marcy and Denise are going to help me quilt a few of the ones that I have left.

For the next 2 months I have some projects of my own that I need to work on so I will not be taking any veteran quilt tops in August or September. If I get caught up I might start taking them again in October or November.

But I will be ordering more backing and we have batting so if you want to quilt your own quilts I'll be happy to bring batting and backing for you. Just give me a couple of week's notice before a meeting so I'll have time to dye a backing for you.

I'll let you know before the October meeting when I will be taking in more tops.

Estelle Porter news

Just wanted to let everyone know that Estelle had back surgery earlier today. They left for vacation but she was in so much pain that they had to come home. Tom says the surgery went well and she will likely need some time in rehab after a few days in the hospital. No visitors yet but you can send cards to her home address (check the membership list for that). Will post another update when we have one.

July Friday/Saturday Sewing

Friday and Saturday sewing days were well attended with lots to sew and say and show; guess we were making up for not getting together in June.

We have a new community service project: removing patches from Ashland Police Department uniform shirts. They are changing to a new color and all the sewn on badges have to be removed from their current shirts before they pass the old ones on and reuse the patches on their new uniforms. Yesterday we removed 4 patches from each of 28 previously own shirts - still in great condition because they are made of heavy polyester (yuck). Today we removed 2 sleeve patches from each of 50 new shirts, tags still on. We made fast work of it with 8 people today. Thank you to everyone who set aside their own sewing to help take off patches and to Peg for delivery and pick-up of the shirts. Here are just a few of the patches. There may be more at our August 9 & 10 sewing days.

NOW FOR SOME EXCITING NEWS:

We have been gifted 7 vintage quilt tops, and we all agreed they would be a fabulous addition to our September Silent Auction: Trash to Treasure. They were given to Christa B. by a friend of a friend, whose family did not want to keep them. So, if you've ever wanted to have a beautiful vintage quilt top to finish as you like, this is your chance without having to go from antique store to antique store in search of a lovely old top.

The money from these quilts will go towards funding our Veteran Quilt Project and we've made so many quilts this year it's time to buy backing fabric.

Take a look at these tops and maybe you'll want to bid on one (or more) at our September meeting. They are all bed size - some bigger than others, but nothing small.

The End

Updated Quilt Show Entry Information

Have you selected your quilts for our show in September? If not, please do! We want everyone represented in the show. Our best shows are the ones with the most participation.

Entries are Due August 6 but, if you have them ready, please bring them to the July meeting. The earlier Estelle receives them the less stress the whole process it. Also it's very important that you include a color photo, she doesn't have the ability to print color photos.

You can download the entry from here.

PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE IN DATE:  THE DATE FOR DROPPING OFF YOUR QUILT/S HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM SUNDAY, SEPT. 9 TO FRIDAY, SEPT. 6, BETWEEN 9 AND 10 AM AT THE MONTPELIER CENTER.

A reminder for our fall exhibit.  We hope to include quilts that were created to fulfill our challenges from the past two years.  Just in case you've forgotten them they were:

1.  Create a pieced background; applique an object onto the background.

2.  Paint Chip Challenge -- pick a color from those supplied and create a piece with that focus.

3.  Using a randomly picked alphabet character, create a quilt to showcase that character.

4.  Create a quilt inspired by the word " idyll" or "ideal."

Note: we had two other challenges but they involved creating a postcard and we will not be using these.
