Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a great holiday! We sure ended 2021 on a high note with our final delivery of veterans quilts (123 for the year) and the delivery stack for 2022 has already started.

We are kicking off the New Year with early sewing days since the 1st falls on Saturday. Our sewing days this month are January 7 - 8.

Our regular meeting is scheduled for January 11. The program for January is First Quilt/Last Quilt. This is a group show and tell event where you can show us how your quilting style or skills have changed over your quilting life. Bring your first (or an early) quilt and your most recent (or somewhat recent) quilt and tell us all about them and your quilting journey.

Don't forget to bring all of your normal show-and-tell too!

Hanover County does require registration for all of these events and you can register on their Event Page, select Clubs and Social to find our events. Registrations is open for all events through May.

We need programs! There are no programs scheduled for 2022 so please consider signing up to provide a program. The signup form is here and there's also a link on the sidebar.

Do you have a great, easy pattern that's perfect for a veterans quilt? We would love to see it.

Do you have a stash of scrap (or applique or whatever your thing is) quilts that would make for a good trunk show? Please share it with us!

Do you want to host a block of the month? Oh yes, we're game.

Are you artistically inclined? We could all use some help learning how to put interesting color combinations together.

There are so many possibilities and each one of you has a talent that we would love for you to share. Please consider hosting a program. We are soo much stronger when we all participate.

July Friday/Saturday Sewing

Friday and Saturday sewing days were well attended with lots to sew and say and show; guess we were making up for not getting together in June.

We have a new community service project: removing patches from Ashland Police Department uniform shirts. They are changing to a new color and all the sewn on badges have to be removed from their current shirts before they pass the old ones on and reuse the patches on their new uniforms. Yesterday we removed 4 patches from each of 28 previously own shirts - still in great condition because they are made of heavy polyester (yuck). Today we removed 2 sleeve patches from each of 50 new shirts, tags still on. We made fast work of it with 8 people today. Thank you to everyone who set aside their own sewing to help take off patches and to Peg for delivery and pick-up of the shirts. Here are just a few of the patches. There may be more at our August 9 & 10 sewing days.

NOW FOR SOME EXCITING NEWS:

We have been gifted 7 vintage quilt tops, and we all agreed they would be a fabulous addition to our September Silent Auction: Trash to Treasure. They were given to Christa B. by a friend of a friend, whose family did not want to keep them. So, if you've ever wanted to have a beautiful vintage quilt top to finish as you like, this is your chance without having to go from antique store to antique store in search of a lovely old top.

The money from these quilts will go towards funding our Veteran Quilt Project and we've made so many quilts this year it's time to buy backing fabric.

Take a look at these tops and maybe you'll want to bid on one (or more) at our September meeting. They are all bed size - some bigger than others, but nothing small.

The End

Quilts for Veterans

Sewing on Friday and Saturday was a fun time visiting and sewing and especially nice that some of our newer members joined us. These quilts for veterans are all a result of group efforts - cutting, sewing, pressing together and discussing fabric choices, etc.  A couple of them still need borders, but we ran out of time!

July Sewing

Our July Sewing days are July 10 & 11. I know this is a busy time of year for many people, including those going on vacation. There was some talk about cancelling sewing this month, but let's see how much interest there is. Please leave a comment if you are planning to come!

Dot Holloway is home after being in the hospital and Sheltering Arms Rehab for nearly two months. She is a founding member of Country School Quilters whose birthday is July 4th! Her address, if you'd like to send her a birthday card:
17065 Huckleberry Hill Lane, Montpelier, VA 23192

Our July 14 meeting will be our annual summer pot luck dinner. Please note our meeting time will be 6:30. Please bring a covered dish and your appetite.

Sewing March 13 & 14

It's that time of month - Friday and Saturday sewing together. Pack up your sewing stuff, your lunch and come join us for as long as you like. We'll start at 9 a.m. and sew until mid/late afternoon. Sewing both days is nice because we can leave our machines, etc., overnight. No need to bring your iron or cutting mats, we have those. If you can't come sew, just stop by to visit.

Crazy Quilt

Miriam was busy at Saturday Sewing and in addition to binding a Veteran Quilt she made her cotton block for the Crazy Quilt we are making for another Veteran Quilt.

She purchased fabric with the lines printed for foundation piecing.

Foundation piecing with cotton fabrics.

Almost finished...

Miriam is also making a set of blocks using fancy fabrics,
and embellishing with decorative stitches.

Miriam, will you please leave a comment with information about where
you got the foundation fabric? This is such a good idea and others
may want to start their own Crazy Quilt using printed fabric.

Cold days are good for sewing!

UPDATE:  Miriam just called to tell me she tried to leave a comment and it didn't work.

The foundation fabric by BENARTEX is called "Foundation by the Yard" and comes in several block designs. It is sold by the panel. She found it at Patchwork Plus in Dayton, VA and is going to get enough for us to each make a FANCY block, in addition to our cotton block. Won't that be fun!  Miriam's fancy blocks are very inspiring!  See below.

You can see all the Benartex foundations here

Sew Together

TUESDAY SEWING - mark your calendar for January 27!

We are on the calendar with Hanover Parks and Recreation to sew the 4th Tuesday of each month - that's January 27.

Those of us who come and sew together know what a good time it is and welcome others to come sew and visit with us. A cold day might be a good day for us to make soup. Who's coming?

Friday Sewing

Here are a few pictures from Friday sewing.

A quilt for a veteran by Betsy

Baby quilt by Betsy

Julie finished the binding on a quilt that CSQ made to donate to Quilt Bingo
 - a Cancer Fundraiser at the Montpelier Center.

Miriam made good progress on her red stars

Nancy and Julie sat across from each other piecing their hexies.
They are both making "Handful of Scraps" a BOM by Edyta Sitar.
(they are using different fabrics)

Vicki ironed/starched 25 yards of fabric

Miriam brought her GO! cutter for us to use on Saturday which we put to use cutting fabric for kits for the January BOM. We had an assembly line going with Karen cutting, Sandy and Becky prepping fabric, and Jenny counting and putting it into zip lock bags. It was a lot of fun! I forgot my camera, but Julie brought hers and we'll post more pictures soon.

Sewing Friday and Saturday

We had a nice group for Sewing this weekend. There's always room for more people though so please consider joining us at the next Sewing Friday and Saturday, January 9 & 10. It's a great opportunity to put some tables together to baste a quilt. You can come for an hour or for both days.  For inspiration here are some of the projects that we worked on this weekend.

Miriam A. is making a quilt with these red and cream Ohio Star blocks.

Becky B. put together tis top from blocks collected at the December meeting. This is going to be an awesome veteran's quilt.

Nancy P. is making this disappearing 9-patch for herself.

Julie is working on a wool applique quilt.

Estelle P. finished the 3rd (and last) veteran's quilt from donated blocks. She's officially over these blocks and was excited to start cutting fabrics for an apple core quilt made with homespun plaids.

Sandy A. made these blocks that will be used to make a Christmas table runner.

Carol C. started a quilt for her grandson. It's a flannel quilt that is constructed on the serger.

I've been making these blocks all year at Friday and Saturday sewing and I finally got the top together!

Mark your calendars for January 9 & 10 and join us at out usual meeting place!

Sewing on Friday and Saturday

Lots of activity on Friday and Saturday - the pictures say it all starting with this (3/4") hexagon.

Nancy was busy cutting pieces for her hexagon quilt. She's making "Handful of Scraps" a new Block of the Month by Edyta Sitar. Julie's making it, too - it will be fun to watch their progress.

Betsy was finishing up piecing on the above quilts. The one at the top needs one more row and then it will go to the quilter's to be finished for Betsy's daughter Julia.

Vicki came by for a short visit and gave Betsy her veteran quilt - it's ready for a binding. Sorry there is a clock poking out of the top corner of the picture!

Betsy is making "Peace & Unity" - a block of the month quilt.

Estelle was busy binding veteran quilts.

Estelle finished the binding on this quilt for a veteran.
This is the second quilt she's completed from these donated triangles/squares.

Dot brought her knitting - her she's working on a scarf.
She has made dozens of hats and mittens ready to donate through her church for those in need.

Helen made use of the large tables to cut out fleece dresses for a little girl.

Julie pin basted a veteran quilt and asked for opinions about thread color
for machine quilting. I believe we all agreed about orange!

Julie added the finishing touch to this veteran quilt (notice the fish lure fabric) with a decorative binding stitch. She used the perfect multi-color thread and decorative stitch (see below)

Just back from "A Needle Runs Through it" - Julie's beautiful kingsize quilt with wool batting.
This binding will take some time, especially if she does a fancy stitch on it.

Terri and Carole were busy basting quilts (see below) - top one for Alex (name at top)
The center one is Terri's (yea, she made it for herself)
The bottom quilt is a veteran quilt made from Bingo blocks.

What a surprise when Terri pulled this string of pieces out of her box.
Terri loves tiny little pieces!
A box full of little scraps turns into these little beauties!

Our next sewing day is Tuesday, Sept. 23 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Sewing days are a good time to visit and get to know each other and share ideas, etc.
You can bring your lunch, or go to nearby Subway or Domino's.
It's a great way to spend the day!
