Volunteers Needed at Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival

As everyone knows, Elsa Brooks coordinates our volunteer efforts with the Virginia Quilt Museum. Following is a note from her regarding volunteering at the VQM table to sell raffle tickets and white glove service in the exhibit during the quilt show. Please contact Elsa (see your membership list) if you can help out.

Here is her message. I cannot attach the form but volunteer shifts are basically 2 hours each and she needs volunteers all 3 days.

Country School Members,

I had planned to discuss Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival at the January meeting, but the weather didn't cooperate.

Are you planning or need a excuse to attend the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in Hampton, February 23 - 26, 2017?  Don't have time to volunteer at the VQM in Harrisonburg?  Could you volunteer to white glove on Thursday or sell tickets at the museum's table at the show?  No money required.  Just volunteer for a two hour shift.

This year, as coordinator of the raffle table, several previous volunteers are not able to help because of other commitments.  Can you help?  I've attached the current volunteer schedule.  I am in desperate need for white glove volunteers on Thursday.  If you don't have white gloves, not to worry, we will have some at the raffle table which is located outside of the show in the main hallway.  I need a total of 10 volunteers for white gloving.  If we have four folks that want to volunteer for the same 2 hour shift, that's OK.  Show management staff will assign an area for you to white glove.  If you want, you can shift with other volunteers so that you won't have to look at the same quilts.  This gives you a chance to see the show while helping the museum.

Never volunteered to sell raffle tickets?  This year's raffle quilt is hand appliqued and hand quilted by the Charlottesville Area Quilt Guild.  We will provide information about the quilt and also have 2017 museum bookmarks for distribution.  MAQF is the largest quilt festival on the eastern seaboard, and it's a perfect opportunity for folks to learn about the museum.  Also, it is usually the largest ticket sales for the quilt.

If you want to help but don't want to drive up alone, Annette Young and Carolyn Mills will be coming Thursday.  They meet at the Food Lion and Annette drives to Hampton for the day.  Contact Annette if you need a ride.  Her email is removed from the message. Please see the member ship list or contact another member for her information.

Four chapter members have already volunteered to help in addition to myself.  I hope you will volunteer to help and let me know by Tuesday, January 24, 2017.

As I need to get the white glove list to the show management in February, I couldn't wait for the meeting to as for help.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Upcoming sewing events:

January 24. 4th Tuesday Sewing. We have reserved our building for sewing days on the 4th Tuesday each month during 2017. Thank you Karen, for scheduling all our meeting and sewing days throughout the year with Hanover County Parks & Recreation.

FEBRUARY 10 & 11. Friday and Saturday sewing together. Always a fun time to sew, visit, inspire each other and have some good laughs. Please note: on Saturday we will need to be out of the building by 2 p.m.

FEBRUARY 14. Our regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Since our January meeting was canceled due to snow, we will pay our $15 annual membership dues at our February meeting.

You won't want to miss this meeting because we will have the drawing for the raffle quilt made by Betsy and quilted by Terry. Raffle tickets were sold last May/June for a drawing to be held in July. Sadly, Betsy's quilt was lost and she so very graciously made ANOTHER one. It's a beauty, using her extensive collection of reproduction fabrics to make 2 1/2" hour glass blocks. Terry's quilting flows across the blocks. All money from this quilt will go towards supplies for veteran quilts - our on-going project. See Carolyn at the meeting if you want to purchase a ticket - $1 each.  See pictures of this lap size quilt at the end of this post.

February 28. 4th Tuesday Sewing.

January Sewing

Hanover County Schools are closed today and our meeting has been canceled. The back roads are still snow covered/icy. After days of single digit night temperatures and daytime highs of around 20, we welcome a big warm-up this afternoon.

The snow should be gone by Friday and Saturday for our sewing days. Hope to see everyone for a fun time sewing and visiting together.

Country School Quilters follows Hanover County School policy for canceling meetings.

Check the news - if Hanover County Schools are closed on Tuesday we will not have a meeting.

What is it?

Guess what this is.

Do you need a hint?

.

The marking pen is a good hint.

If you guessed name cards
you would be correct!

I thought it was time to start our new year with new name cards. We will throw away (recycle) the old ones and make new ones at our January meeting. Three colors will make it easier to find them in our storage container.

Your first name determines the color of your card:
A-F = Blue
G-N = Yellow
O-Y = Purple

Fold your card lengthwise and write your name on front and back of the card in BIG letters. We want people sitting next to you as well as those sitting on the other side of the room to be able to read your name.

Maybe at the end of the year we will all know everyone's name!
