Veterans Quilts and October Meetings

Last week I delivered 42 more veterans quilts. The total for the year is 111! Keep up the great work.

Our delivery coordinator is Jennifer. She has been responsible for distributing our quilts since 2018 and has handled around1000 quilts! I always check in with her to make sure she doesn't feel burdened. She says she considered it an honor to play her "small" role. She has contacts at both the Richmond and Fredericksburg VA facilities and makes sure they get delivered where they are most needed and appreciated. At the moment she says about 70% go to Richmond and 30% to Fredericksburg. We really lucked into this situation with Terry Muller when she was a member. Terry met Jen through a Facebook Marketplace sale and started this relationship and we are fortunate. I don't know of anyone else who has visibility and connections in both facilities.

To thank her, I made a quilt this summer and gifted it to her when I delivered these quilts.

I started this quilt just for fun but before I had 3 blocks done, I knew it was for Jennifer. She loves vintage things and this quilt fit right into her guest room.

Exhibit opportunity at Lewis Ginter

I received this message from Richmond Quilt Guild. Please contact Sherry if you are interested.

Hi Vicki, this is not an order (although I am a great fan of your hand dyed fabrics). As current president of Richmond Quilters Guild I received a request from the lady who runs exhibitions at Lewis Ginger Botanical Gardens. They had an unexpected last minute exhibit cancellation and asked if RQG would be interested in providing quilts with a botanical, floral or garden theme to hang from the beginning of February through the end of April.

Even though Country School Quilters is no longer connected with RQG, I know that several of you create beautiful art quilts. Some of these could easily fit into the requested theme.

I remember a quilt that Margaret showed at Colonial Piecemakers Guild in Williamsburg several years ago that was almost all greens. That type of quilt would be great with the theme. Estelle immediately comes to mind as well, but I'm sure that you have other members whose quilts would be a great addition.

Do you think that your group would be interested? It will definitely be a rush to collect and deliver quilts but I think that the venue makes it well worth the effort and I'll be glad to coordinate picking up quilts for your interested members.

You can reach me at sherry.whitford@gmail.com or 757-880-6784 (c) or 757-566-1928 (h). Or you might wish to forward this to your group's president. I sent an email to the chapter presidents of RQG with the idea that they would better know who in their chapter might have quilts that would be appropriate.

Thanks,
Sherry

There was a large crowd with mots of CSQ members and friends attending. Following I'm going to share some photos of the quilts in the exhibit but first want to let you know that if you missed it the exhibit will be up through the end of May.

Estelle Porter's Fiber Art Exhibit!

Evening Egrets

Estelle Porter is an accomplished fiber artist with strong ties to Randolph-Macon College.  Her fiber art is the culmination of training in a variety of media.  She incorporates painting, drawing, photography and printing along with fiber art techniques to achieve a variety of surface design effects on cloth.  Recent work reflects her rediscovery of family connections to the Greek island of Kythera.

Challenge fabrics are in!

At the June meeting we talked about having a challenge fabric project. We did this about 10 years ago and it made for a great exhibit. We wanted to do another in preparation for our exhibit at the Montpelier Center in September 2016.

Here's how it will work. You will receive 2 fabrics and you make a quilt project no larger than 80" in total perimeter (the total of all 4 side dimensions are 80" or less). There has to be a recognizable amount of both fabrics in your finished quilt.

That's all there is in the way of rules.

You can add any other fabrics, embellish any way you wish, make any pattern, use any technique. ANYTHING.

I decided to unveil the fabrics here on the blog in case you want to purchase any other fabrics from the same collection. The fabrics are Color Crush by Timeless Treasures and I got them at a great sale price from Hancock's of Paducah.

In selecting the fabrics I decided on 2 colorways. I know that we are sometimes more comfortable with warmer or cooler colors so you will get your choice (until supplies run out) of these sets.

Cool Fabrics

Warm Fabrics

I have 16 FQ sets of each.

If you feel strongly about which you want just leave a comment on this blog post and I'll reserve a set for you. Fabrics will be available at the August meeting and finished projects are due August 2016!

Are you interested in a UFO Challenge for 2015?

I'm coordinating a UFO Busting effort on my blog this year and thought it might be fun to have one just for CSQ members. Is anyone interested is doing that?

It would be a fun way to encourage each other to finish (or get rid of) some projects and clear a little space for even more new projects. I'm not proposing anything fancy just a little bookkeeping as we go through the year.

Here's how it would work. This week we all count up all of the projects we have in process. It could be quilting projects, embroidery projects, knitting projects......whatever you want to count. Post in the comment on this post how many you have. Each month I'll put up a post where you can identify how many you've completed and how many you started for that month. I'll keep a running tally and we'll see how we do at the end of the year.

For myself, I have 31 UFOs (all quilted items) as of today. I believe my oldest one is a Cathedral Window quilt from about 2000. I'd really love to get that one done this year.

How about you? How many projects do you have (and you can categorize them if you want) and what's the oldest one?

Member Survey - Scheduling a visit to the Valentine Richmond History Center

At the meeting last night Karen passed on some information about the possibility for us to visit the Valentine Richmond History Center. She has mentioned this in a couple of past meetings. The VRHC has an extensive textiles collection that includes about 200 quilts. She talked to them about the possibility of us getting a private viewing of the quilt collection. It would also include a tour of the house and galleries. We would schedule it sometime on the fall, maybe late October or November.

We can schedule a private tour of the house and collection but it requires 20 people minimum at $20 each ($400 paid in advance). Marian Moody and I (Vicki) have both been on such tours at the museum and both feel that $20 is a very small price to pay for the experience.

Before we schedule anything we need to survey the members to see if you are interested So please reply to this blog post answering 2 questions.

1) Do you want to go on the tour and willing to pay $20 to do it?

2) If the answer to #1 is yes, do you care/prefer if the tour is schedule for a weekday or Saturday? The tour will happen during the day. It's probably easier to schedule a week day but that may impact some members ability to attend.

Please let us know what you think.

Memorial Day

It was a beautiful day to be outside and Hanover wayside Park is a beautiful setting for the Hanover Veteran's Memorial. Karen, Kitty, Betsy, Nancy, Cathy, Becky, Carolyn and Vicki attended the service today. It was a wonderful honor to be asked to be a part of the service.

Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling was the guest speaker and there was a large crowd in attendance. Here's a slideshow of the photos or you can view them in Flickr here.
