The plan is to have fun making blocks - your choice of design. Your house can be any style: victorian, colonial, cabin, farm house, rancher, 2-story, split-level, etc., or maybe you want to make a barn, school or church - any building style representative of our community.
Your block can be pieced or appliqued - again, your choice. We have 2 back ground fabrics for the blocks, slightly different in color, to add another design element to the quilt. Each person can take one of each.
Make your house not larger than 7" by 7" (we need space around each block).
Background blocks are 10-1/2" - sew your house into the center of the square, do NOT trim the block.
Colors - your choice but don't get too wild or you might get evicted from the neighborhood. ☺
It's fine to machine applique or hand applique your house to the background, your choice!
The quilt will be machine quilted in an overall design, so please do not add any embellishments. I know, it can be tempting to add a cute little button, some lace in a window, rick-rack, etc., but those things are a nightmare when it comes to machine quilting.
At Friday/Saturday sewing, we've had a lot of fun discussions about the various styles of houses we'll have in our quilt - so having said all that, here are some samples from Julie's fancy houses to a cottage and a cabin by Becky. You can see the slight difference in the background fabrics.
